Hello everyone...It's been a long time!

Life is good. Just busy. I successfully completed my first two quarters of nursing school. So I'm one-third of the way there. YIPEE!!!!

With six weeks of break from school and two toddlers, my time (and funds) have been limited. Unfortunately I didn't get to do much decorating for the holidays.

Please allow me to share with you my open house from last year. Christmas 2009...It was a beauty!

Welcome to our Holiday Open House. We've been expecting you, please come in!

Here's the piano decorated with a collection of candlesticks and ornaments.

Can you believe I found this vintage sheet music in my attic? Dating back to the 1890's, this book was given me from my grandmother. It belonged to her mother.

Another attic find, this book of carols from 1970 was also given to me from my grandmother.

Here's the Christmas tree. I wanted it to feel fun and festive, so it's dressed with lots of red and lime green. What's that? It looks like Santa's already been here and left a little something.

I purchased this retro bicycle in 2005 when I found out I was pregnant with our first child. Four years later, I'm hopeful this will be the year that one of my children will ride it.

These are a couple special ornaments I'd like to share with you. They commemorate our little boys' first Christmas.

Here's a bucket of leftover ornaments. They were just too pretty to put away.

It's getting a little cool. Let's gather by the fireplace to warm up.

Let me turn on the lights. I'd like you to see my Ballard's inspired mantel.

Remember these stockings, I'm so proud of them!

And look at these adorable Gift boxes! It's amazing how far a Dollar Tree gift box, some wire-edged ribbon (also found at DT) and a little hot glue goes.

Shh...I think I hear something?!!!!!

No Writing on the Fireplace Please!!!

Earlier this year I decided it was time to update my fireplace. Through much trial, error and reader feedback, I finally found inspiration.

Pacific Northwest

I loved this fireplace for the simplicity and timeless look of the surrounding slate. Imagine my surprise when I read that it was actually a recycled blackboard. A Craigslist search revealed a few sheets of "vintage blackboard"...but at prices I didn't want to pay.

About that time Janell from Isabella and Max Rooms was completing her awesome chalkboard wall when it occurred to me....

If original chalkboards are slate....

And chalkboard paint is made to replicate the look of slate chalkboards....

Then why can't I use chalkboard paint to paint my fireplace surround?

Well Hubby quickly told me why...because it should be fireproof incase we ever want to hook up the gas logs. {Yes, we had to remove the gas logs because they had become the children's favorite toy}.

Finally, the solution came to me as I was watching HGTV....

Cement board {AKA Durock, Wonderboard, Hardibacker} was just what I needed. Fireproof, waterproof, and less than $20 at any Lowes or Home Depot...OH YEAH!

After reviewing my share of chalkboard paint, I choose the Valspar Chalkboard paint because it guaranteed a "slate-like finish". Exactly what I wanted and at $13 a can, it was still within my budget.

So after cutting the cement board to size, rolling two coats of chalkboard paint and applying a coat of matte finish polyurethane...here's what we ended up with.

I love it!

As you can see, the neutral color and simple design of the chalkboard "slate" allow the fireplace's beautiful woodwork take center stage.

So there you have it, another use for chalkboard paint. Whoever would have known?

A trip to Holland...

March was Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. I started writing this post in April. Overwhelmed with emotion, I stopped. Three months later, I'm ready to finish.

If you've been reading my blog, then you know our path to parenthood has been filled with grief. Our first pregnancy ended in loss and our second pregnancy....

took us to Holland.

Twelve weeks into our pregnancy, the technician noticed an abnormality in the ultrasound of our unborn child. She asked me to get dressed, the doctor wanted to see us in her office.

Entering the Doctor's office, I recognized that look of disappointment on her face from the last time she had given us bad news.  Sure enough, the baby's brain was NOT developing correctly. After double checking her medical books, the doctor suspected our baby had Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (ACC).

We were referred to the Prenatal specialists at The Ohio State University Medical Center.

Following an amniocentesis and a fetal MRI, the only thing that could be confirmed is that we were having a boy and there was no genetic abnormalities. {Praise God for those victories!}

The next few weeks were spent crying and worrying of what we become of our unborn child affectionately called peanut. {How ironic is it that Max is allergic to peanuts?} After fussing God out a few times and asking him why me, I became angry with him.  {I call these moments my season of GETHSEMANE}

Whether it was God or not, one day I realized that this child is going to be WHO God created him to be. I can't spend the rest of my life worrying about his abilities and disabilities.   Yes, there will be days {like today} that I'm saddened by his limitations but there will be MORE days that I rejoice in the beauty of who he is.

Following another mri when Max was four months old, it was confirmed that he had ACC. We got the news while we were vacationing in South Carolina. At that very moment we were faced with the choice, to sit around and feel sorry for ourselves or keep going.

Max turned three in May.  Despite his best efforts, he does not walk.  In April, we added another specialist to his medical repertoire. A doctor specializing in physical medicine. His most recent diagnosis is Cerebral Palsy.

But like everytime else, we'll just keep on going...

School Daze and Lessons Learned

Well, I made it. Although I've survived my first two weeks of class, It has certainly been a comedy of errors.

By the end of the first day, I learned the most valuable lesson in self care.

Too nervous to eat, I skipped breakfast thinking I would have time to grab a snack before lunch. WRONG! When they say clinical is scheduled 7a-1p, that's what they mean. We had {two} two minute potty breaks. Whew!

After clinical, I have a thirty minute break until my next class. Any smart person would eat lunch, but not me. I was afraid I'd be late to class. So by the time 3pm rolled around, I was done. MIGRAINE!

The good part...I managed to pick up the kids and was driving home before I vomitted all over myself and the driver's side of the car.
The bad part...c'mon the whole experience was bad. Who really wants to clean this mess.

The other mishap came on Thursday. As I was trying to determine if I had the actual pen or trainer-pen, I accidently shot myself with Max's epi-pen. Lucky for me it was a through and through shot to my non -dominant thumb.

The common factor for both events: ANXIETY.

I approached the second week getting more rest and feeling less stressed. I start each day with a hearty bowl of oatmeal and pack a snack. I not only found the cafeteria, but also a couple lunch buddies from my nursing classes.

Although, I made a couple mistakes this week (like studying the wrong vocab words for my first Anatomy and Physiology quiz), I'm feeling more confident.

Right now my biggest challenge is the amount of time I spend on the computer. Technology plays a huge role in today's education. Most of our assignments, grades and class notes are given via Blackboard (the university's web-based community). By the end of the day, my eyes are strained and my head hurts from staring at a screen. I'm wondering if glasses would help?

So there you have it...my first school report. I'm enjoying school. I love learning and I'm thankful for the opportunity I've been given.

I have three exams next week...so I need to get back to studying. Have a good weekend!

New Life

Happy Easter!

The great gift of Easter is hope - Christian hope which makes us have that confidence in God, in his ultimate triumph, and in his goodness and love, which nothing can shake.

Knowing how much I love flowers. My neighbor brought me a bouquet of flowers from her church's Easter Celebration {2009}.

She told me that these flowers were used to cover a lifesize cross. I was delighted that the bouquet contained one of my favorite flowers, the very fragrant hyacinth.

Two days later as I labored in the hospital with my third child,

the nurse and I talked about our love of gardening.

The nurse tells me a familiar story....her church gathered flowers to cover a lifesize cross. The flowers she donated were lovingly grown and given life by her very hand...purple hyancinths.

A few hours later and before my Dr.'s arrival, those same set of hands would personally deliver my precious son, Miles.

On the Move

What a week!

With school starting on Monday, I've been in a hurried frenzy to go, go, go. Hubby was off this past weekend, so we hit the highway three out his four days off.

Saturday was spent looking at ~~used~~ new {to us} mini-vans. Wow...can anyone say sticker shock? Yeah, we decided to wait on that one.

I think Max was the most disappointed.  He spent the next couple days pointing and ~~whining~~ saying "vaan, vaan, vaAN, VAAANN!".

The other two days were spent in "the city" shopping with my mom. While Hubby and Max enjoyed the Columbus International Car Show, Mom, Miles and I hit up the local antique and thrift shops.   This time she was footing the bill on our great finds. Isn't it great when you get to spend someone else's money?

This May, my mom will be moving and she's ~~hired~~ asked me to decorate her new apartment home. Yipee!

Her new apartment is literally a blank slate with white walls, white mini blinds and very light carpet. The only color comes from a newly remodeled kitchen of maple cabinetry and black appliances.

Our shared decorating objective: INSERT COLOR and WARMTH.

Here's a couple of pictures from the property's website.

Her apartment is one level. It does not have the spiral staircase.

But it does have wonderful nine foot ceilings!

A gas fireplace to snuggle up to.

Our other objective is to furnish her apartment affordably with ~~used~~ new-to-her furniture. Describing her current belongings, my mother said she "is tired of looking at it all" and wants a fresh start.

The only items to make the chopping block are either antiques or furnishings to be recycled with new paint, fabric or stain.

Check out this simple wrought iron chandelier we snagged for $36.

Mom was delighted that I picked out something

that did not need to be re-wired or painted.

Oops...on the way to the car I did drop a candle cover.

A few days later, I was back in Columbus to pick up this Craigslist find...a beautiful cherry dresser.

And at $80, it was perfect and impossible to pass up!

The seller was so sweet. Although she had several offers, she said it felt right to sell it to my mother (via me) because it was a gift from her own mother more than 40 years ago.

Mom and I picked it up on Wednesday and it's even more lovely in person. I can't wait to give it the Briwax treatment {Thanks Janet for the great tip!}

Light it up, It's Party Time!

Just got paid, Friday night. Party huntin...

Each week as Friday draws near I can't help but to start humming this little ditty from the '80s. Around 4pm on Thursday, I get a strong urge to head over to Clossman's {my favorite thrift store}.

Since I've been shopping there, I've discovered quite a few gems that I haven't shared with y'all due to a lack of time. However, this latest one is too good to keep to myself. It also gives me an opportunity to be a PAR-TAY GIRL...woo hoo!

One of my favorite spots in Clossman's is the 2nd floor Second Hand Store. A treasure trove of unique items, the lighting department is always my first stop. It's filled with shelves of old lamps and chandeliers.

A few weeks ago I spotted a chandelier with potential. However, it wasn't love at first sight. It was dull and dirty. Not exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something with a little more *SHINE*

Well I found what I was looking for on Ebay. But at $69.95, I just couldn't do it.

I have this problem called indecision that prevents me from spending more money on something than I have to. So if I don't like it, I won't feel too bad if it ends up in the attic.

Funny thing, the more I looked at the Ebay light, {which is supposedly fashioned after the Restoration Hardware's Library Chandelier} it reminded me of the dirty little chandelier I spotted at Clossman's.

As soon as the snow stopped, I headed out to pick up my little find.

BEFORE

For $9.95, I could NOT get to the cash register fast enough!

The chandelier was disassembled, rewired and got a bath in muriatic acid to remove a peeling clearcoat.

I love, love, LOVE this light! I don't think it will be seeing the attic anytime soon.

At $20 {$10 for the light and $10 for the electrical wire}, it's truly a trash to treasure.

Pieces of Inspiration

A few weeks back, I picked up these ~~ugly~~ awesome MCM chairs for a song. Well, they're still ~~ugly~~ unfinished in all their vinyl glory. But I love them just the same.

They've settled nicely in their new home beside the fireplace.

~Inspiration Found~

As I was preparing the spotlight for BluLabel Bungalow, I discovered the Atlanta store Pieces, Inc. and the talented proprietor Lee Kleinhelter {Thank you Erica for the introduction}.

Oh goodness...I was smitten!

Well as-is the story of my life {Cristal taste with a Natural light budget}, I can afford NO-THING. But that didn't stop me from gaining lots of inspiration!

Check out some of the chairs I peeped on the Pieces website.

I love how these chairs resemble the high backs on my thrift store finds.

I'm also fond of the upholstery used on these chairs. They're all covered in fresh and affordable {type} fabrics without feeling faddish.

Basement: Before & After

Thank you all for the well wishes. After a great night's sleep and a wonderful three hour nap today, we're ALL feeling much better.

Since things haven't progressed much around here, I thought I'd take a minute to show you one of my favorite DIY/Before and Afters projects.

This is what our basement looked like when we bought Seaborn in June 2005. It was a far cry from the cozy, basement family room that I envisioned.

Here was my initial assessment of the space...

Disliked

Wood paneling

Concrete floor

Tiled walls

Exposed water meter and plumbing

{demolition}

Shortly after starting the demo process, we realized the former owner mastered the theory of reduce, re-use and recycle. This space was definately his workshop.

Divided into several small spaces, most of the walls were constructed of scrap wood. Interestingly enough, we found a piece of old wood gutter used to shimmy up the ceiling tile. We also found a couple old tv cabinets re-purposed into wall cabinets.

As you can see, all of that resourcefulness amounted to mounds and mounds of nail-ridden debris. OUCH!!!!

Within days we rented and filled the largest roll-off dumpster we could find.

In with the New

{construction}

I'm sorry I don't have more pictures of the construction process. But let's be honest, the after is all you really want to see.

There's Hubby constructing a wall to put in the same

location of the wall we tore down. Oh the irony...

The basement is one of my favorite before and after projects in the house. It has become our guest room, family room, playspace, and home theater.

Yep, home theater. Our home theater is the easiest and best DIY project. It's the scene for many family get togethers.

Knowing how much we love going to the movies, my mom gave us the best Christmas gift ever when she gifted us a digital projector.

We experienced a little sticker shock when we started pricing projector screens. So Hubby set about to build us an affordable alternative. Wanna see it?

The picture quality of the projector is better than this.

It's the photographer's fault this picture is so blurry.

The screen measures 4' H by 8' W. Here's another picture where you can see the prominence of the screen within the room. The wall has been painted black and the screen now covers the ugly exposed plumbing.

Affordable velvet curtains found at Ikea flank the movie screen {and hide additional storage}.

We added a couple sconces {on a dimmer} to give the room a theater-like feel. The ceiling has also been painted black.

We saved money by doing all the demolition, electric and construction ourselves. Approximate costs are as follows:

Construction materials $850

Carpet installation 800

Movie screen 100

The Oh-So-Popular Pendant Light

I think two weeks of sick children {actually one sick with bronchiolitis and the other feverish from teething} has caught up with me because I am beat and it's not even 11pm. Most evenings about this time, I'm catching my second wind and starting laundry, cleaning the house and tending to other household matters. But not tonight...I'm exhausted!

So on with the post {before I fall asleep}...

Within the world of lighting, theres nothing more classic than the pendant light.

According to Design Boom pendant lamps date back to 2700 BC. It's recorded that the first pendant style light was actually a clay lamp that burned animal fat.

Animal fat? Would that be like bacon grease? Whew...thank God times have changed!

Within the past month, my mother has recognized the birthdays of her three adorable children...Lisa{me}, Hope {my sister} and Josh {my brother}.

However, with children in three seperate states, mom has only been able to celebrate this season of birthdays with me.

This is my favorite picture of Hope. That smile really captures her silly personality.

As a RN, Hope is currently in school to become a Nurse Practioner {Midwifery Specialist}. She and her husband live in Wisconsin with their mini schnauzer, Holly GoLightly. Yes, Hope's a big fan of Audrey Hepburn and Breakfast at Tiffany's.

This is my favorite picture of "Uncle Mikey" {Max calls him that because Hope's husband is also named Joshua}. I had to search far and wide for this photo. Joshua doesn't like the attention that comes with wearing his uniform. He's so bashful...NOT!

Come April, Joshua will be finishing up a four year contract with the US Army. During that time he was stationed in Germany for two years and did a tour in Iraq.

Ever-Changing Fireplace

1) Making a decorating mistake and talking about it on my blog OR
2) Telling Hubby

Well, the hard part is over with, so let me tell you all about it.

You remember the fireplace?
Of course you do, I've only shown it a dozen times.

Now THE AFTER is the problem. Paired with the mantle, the new tile looked TOO traditional for my taste. I didn't like it. I tried to live with it but I couldn't.

The solution; remove the tiles before the mastic completely dried.

I used a putty knife to remove the tiles and mastic.

Here's the AFTER {after the after}

The wall tiles had been up a few days longer than the floor tiles.
Therefore the mastic was more difficult to remove.

Because it will be covered up,

I didn't worry about restoring the surface to it's original finish.

And there it is...the {sad} current state of my fireplace.

My design goal was to modernize the look of this fireplace. {I failed to achieve the goal on my first attempt}

I want a fireplace surround that contrasts the lacquered and traditional feel of the wooden mantel. We love the natural beauty of this mantel and how it matches the rest of the trim in the room, so we don't want to paint it.

Here are some options I'm considering.

Metal look tile...

Isabella and Max Rooms

Concrete...

Concrete Network

Ancient Art Concrete

True Form Concrete

I'm honesty leaning toward the concrete. I like the neutral gray color and the seamless look.

But like a home decor frugalista, I'm wondering if I could re-create the look of concrete for less.

Let's say I did a smooth stucco finish over the bricks and then painted it with a faux concrete finish.

*UPDATE*

We experimented by painting the bricks {flat black}. Although I don't like it...I'm one step closer to finding a solution. Here's what I learned:

I like the dark color {not black, but maybe gray}

I don't like the grout lines. I would definately prefer a seamless look OR as minimal breaks as possible.

So what do you think? Any fireplace makeovers out there? I'm open to constructive feedback and suggestions.

Oh yes! The good news...we bought a sofa for our living room. I'll have show and tell later this week.

Aspire to Inspire {Fatherly Love}

A while ago, a friend sent me a link to this video. Thanks Louise!

In case you don't watch it, which I highly encourage you to do so, I'll summarize. It's the remarkable story of Patrick Henry Hughes. Born without eyes and a medical condition that prevents him from straightening his arms and legs, Patrick has succeeded his "disability" to become an amazing virtuoso pianist, vocalist and trumpeteer.

As if Patrick HENRY"S story is not enough inspiration, you meet his father, Patrick JOHN.

Spoken in true humility, Patrick JOHN says this "I'm just a parent of a young man that wanted to be in band". Patrick JOHN works midnight shift just so he can attend his son's every class and band practice. Acting as his son's eyes and legs, Patrick JOHN tirelessly maneuvers his son's wheelchair through the formations of the 220 member Marching Band at the University of Louisville.

How amazing is that! A true testimony of the love a father has for his child.

As I thought about this story I was momentarily saddened that my father and I are estranged. But then I remembered I have a Heavenly Father that loves me just as much as Patrick JOHN loves his son and has sacrificed so much more for me.

Here's a letter I received from my Heavenly Father reminding me of how much he loves me:

DIY Bathroom {Demolition & Assessment}

It appears my transition to the updated version of blogger has caused some formatting issues. Please be patient until I can get this issue resolved.

After a year long break, work is resuming in our bathroom. I thought this would be a great time to bring you up to speed on that project.

****I interrupt this post to tell you that the redesign of our living room is taking a short sabbitical. Sabbatical-a period of time Lisa takes to research and decide on decorating/ design plans before moving forward. And now back to the regularly scheduled programming***

You remember this from the before tour?

Believe it or not, Hubby and I were delighted by the original state of this bathroom. For us, original meant no hackjob renovations to work around.

Within weeks of closing on Seaborn, we rented the largest roll-off dumpster and began a full-on house renovation.

This bathroom was high on our to-do list. So take a closer look...I don't want you to miss any of the details:

Dated vanity and faucets

Stenciled vanity, laundry chute and linen cabinet

Pink and blue wall tile

Mosaic Floor Tile

After gutting the bathroom, it functioned as a janitorial closet for two years. When work resumed last February (2009), we remembered why we had stopped.

Hiding behind the wall was a BIG secret. The toilet's cast iron vent stack had corroded. For a cost of $1500, the plumber was more than eager to replace it.

Lucky for me, Hubby is a jack of all trades and my Jeff-dad {ex step-dad} is a professional contractor. The only obstacle was the 120 miles between our homes.

Once we found a time that worked for both guys, it took two loongg days of filthy work to replace the vent pipe and re-plumb the entire bathroom.

Once Hubby installed new greenboard around the bathtub and backerboard on the floor and walls, we finally had a blank slate to begin construction.

The total cost to replace the vent stack AND install new plumbing was about $200... well below the plumber's quote of $1500.

ASSESSMENT

As a DIY decorator, I try to assess every element of the space {floor, trim, walls, window treatments, lighting, furniture and accessories} before moving forward with a design plan. Here is my assessment of this bathroom.

I liked the mosaic floor tile. However, the original tile needed replaced due to it's poor condition.
I didn't like the pink and blue tiles, but I liked the shape and size of the 4x4 wall tiles.
I liked the frosted window glass for increased privacy.
I liked the idea of sconces flanking the mirrored medicine chest. Did not like that the sconces were the only source of general lighting.
I didn't like the dated vanity and toilet. However, I loved the cast iron tub with period styling.
I loved the style of cross handle faucets that were originally on the tub.
Hubby hated that there was no real shower; only the hand-held jobby in the low clearance bathtub.
Liked the built in features (shower bar, toilet paper holder, and laundry chute).

Indecisions

Someone recently told me that I am indecisive. Seeking input from Hubby, I said to him "I don't know. What do you think? Do you think I'm indecisive?" Hubby responded by saying "Let's get this straight. You can't decide if you're indecisive, so you're asking me to tell you if you are. "

"Yes" I laughed and got his point.

About this same time, I took a decorating style quiz on the beautiful and inspiring Boulevard Interior Design blog. Well it appears I consistently answered Transitional style with a bit of Glam.
"Transitional", I thought, "Is this another way of saying, you consistently can't make up your mind".

Just when I was beginning to think the decorating world had an in-between category for finicky people like me who have a hard time committing to a particular style, I found the definition for Transitional Style:

"A marriage of traditional and contemporary furniture, finishes, material and fabrics equating to a classic timeless design. Furniture lines are simple yet sophisticated featuring either straight lines or rounded profiles. Fabric can range from graphic patterns on overstuffed sofas to textured chenilles on sleek wood frames."

This picture confirmed that my style is indeed, transitional.

The reasons I love this room are the same elements HGTV identify as being Transitionally styled:

Neutral color pallette with accents of dark brown
Minimal accessories
Interesting fabrics like chenille, corduroy, leather and cotton add depth to neutral room
Mix of straight and curved lines balance masculine and feminine

Based on the use of masculine, dark woods and light, feminine fabrics with a touch bling, I'm thinking these two rooms by Sarah Richardson could quality as being transitional.

Stories that {Aspire to Inspire}

I truly believe that we are all surrounded by inspiration. It's in the untold stories of loved ones, uncaptioned photos and the unseen works of artists.

That thought was the inspiration for my first MckLinky...

Aspire to Inspire. A place to share the stories behind the people, beliefs, art or words that inspire you.

As I prepared to write this post, I thought about all the things that inspire me and what I would like to share with you. Although, I made list after list of potential items, I kept coming back to the same topic; storytelling.

I wanted to tell you why storytelling is so important...

Storytelling has been a long-time tradition in the African community. It basically served as a way of passing along traditions and beliefs from one generation to another.

Although storytelling may have been mastered by the African and African-american community, it's practiced everywhere. By everyone.

If you've been reading my blog, you know I love to tell stories. It's how I make sense of life. But what you may not know, is how much I love to hear stories. This also helps me make sense of life and keep things in perspective. It's probably why I became a counselor.

Following the loss of our baby, the stories of others became a source of encouragement and inspiration to me. The website Journey of Hearts was a lifeline. I was especially found of the article, The Importance of Telling (and Listening) to the Story. Author Kirstin Dyer summarizes the benefits of storytelling as:

Inspires and provides hope during dark times
Life changes and losses are assimilated into a person's life story by the telling of their story
Translates memories into concrete manner that can help preserve tradition and cultures

As a new blogger, I've been encouraged by reading all your blogs. Endless stories of hope and resiliency. Lessons ranging from how to paint to blog etiquette. Tender memories of loved ones lost along the away and new challenges ahead....none of these words have fallen on deaf ears. I appreciate you all sharing those moments with me and your fellow bloggers. Your openness and vulnerability has encouraged me beyond words.

So now I'm preparing for a new chapter in my life. On March 29, I'll be starting nursing school, which is one step closer to pursuing my dream...of moving to the ocean.

Thank you all for listening to my story (over the past few months) and more importantly being part of my story. The words you leave here will continue to inspire me.
As the date draws near, I have alot of work to be done with organizing childcare, orientation, Dr appts, ordering uniforms, etc. Although, my time will be limited, I'll keep you posted on our decorating projects, but I apologize in advance if I don't get around to visiting you all.

Fireplace Makeover

No turning back now. The work on our living room has officially began! We started with a simple project...re-tiling the fireplace.

To refresh your memory here's the BEFORE...

Although the brick and tile were in excellent condition, I didn't like how the beautiful wood mantel gets lost amidst the red masonry.

Hubby started by laying out the pattern for the wall tile.

You can see his little helper assisting him line up the tile.

Once everything is laid out, the tile is ready to set.

Out comes the tile mastic, trowel, spacers, and wet saw for cutting. Thankfully we had all these items on hand. The total cost of the project was a very affordable, $80.

Tiles are NOW set. The fireplace interior received a coat of high heat spray paint....

This is a first look photo. We still have to grout, but choosing a grout color is a BIG decision. There are so many choices that Hubby and I are at a temporary impasse.

I have to be honest, I'm still freaking out...you know the feeling you get when you change something and then you wonder if you made the right decision????

Aspire to Inspire

INSPIRATION-arousal of the mind to special activity or creativity.

That's the definition of what blogging has become to me. I've spent most of my life wanting to help and inspire people to live better, happier lives. Along the way, I've spent alot of money, probably too much money on education. Yet since I've started blogging, I've learned more about myself and others than any school could ever teach me.

I've learned that I, like most people want to be inspired and in return, want to inspire others. Just think about it;

Absolutely Beautiful Things is a lovely and very popular decorating blog about nothing more than "the beautiful things I find which inspire me".
The Lettered Cottage and Young House Love are two awesome DIY blogs with everyday couples tackling projects historically presented by Bob Vila-type handymen.

I could go on and on listing blogs that we go to for our daily dose of inspiration.
So what do we do with all that inspiration? We do things that we never thought we could do.
Don't believe me? Just check out Monday's at Between Naps on the Porch and Tuesday's at A Soft Place to Land. They're filled with SAHM teaching themselves how to operate nail guns, compound miter saws, etc. All in an effort to make a beautiful home and life for their families while working within their budgets and utilizing resources readily available to them.
Although, I haven't attempted to use any tools, blogging has inspired me to do something more. Explore my creative side. Write, open up, reach out to others. Believe it or not, I hate to write. I love to talk, but I HATE to write. But since I've started blogging, I've become more comfortable and confident with my writing skills.
So with that said, let me get to my point. This winter, I've found myself increasingly saddened by personal memories of loss, the crisis in Haiti and the hurts of fellow bloggers.
Yet for every sad moment, there'a a dozen more happy ones...you just have to look to find them. I can't tell you how much reading your blogs and celebrating life's smallest victories with you has lifted my spirits and reminded me of the resiliency of human nature. I look forward to your creativity. Some days it's the escape I need from the harsh realities of life. The smallest reminder that "this too shall pass".
So this is what I'd like to do. I want to host a MckLinky party called Aspire to Inspire.
The purpose of this party is to share your favorite music, quote, book, picture, or object in hopes that it will encourage someone else. Most days, we are surrounded by inspiration. Stories that are unheard by others, photos that are uncaptioned. Pieces of art that are unseen. All items taken for granted by us and possibly something that could possibly encourage or lift the spirit of others.
To get you thinking, I'm just going to give you a list of things that inspire me. I won't elaborate, that's the purpose of the MckLinky party. But at least this will give you something to think about.

Works for Me Wednesday at We Are That Family

A Light Bulb Moment

To me, lighting really sets the mood for a room. A 40 watt bulb in a cheap lamp is the same as a 40 watt bulb in an expensive one. ~Edward Walker

With the purchase of Seaborn, Hubby and I inherited several boxes of glass jars. While some were nothing more than old spaghetti and pickle jars, the boxes revealed a few antique Atlas, Mason and Ball canning jars.

A few weeks ago I was looking to be inspired for a kitchen light fixture when I came across the most interesting pendant light. It was made from an old preserving jar.

Intrigued by this idea, I found a couple places that sell mason jar pendant lights. Napa Style and Reclaimed Lighting . But at $199 PER pendant, I didn't like them that much.

A little more research revealed a DIY version from the awesome blog Design Sponge. Finally, I thought, a use for those jars in my basement!

Well, I thought I knew what I wanted until I saw this picture of Anthropologie's version on the Apartment Therapy website.

So until I gather that many jars, this goes in the idea file. Just wanted to share the inspiration with you!

Living Room Update

Okay, so y'all remember when I asked you about painting the wood trim in our house?

While most of you voted to paint the trim, I just couldn't rationalize painting it because of it's pristine condition. Good news for Hubby. Bad news for decorating options.

Just as I was pulling together swatches for my living room makeover, I happened upon the uber stylish blog of Paula Grace Designs. Since she's a professional designer and likes to interact with her readers, I posed this question to her, "How do you choose a paint color when you have dark wood trim?"

I simply expected a quick and generic response within her blog, nothing more. Well, much to my surprise, Paula responded with an email. She requested pictures of my room as well as any furniture or artwork that would help in selecting a color. The best part, she didn't ask for any money...it was FREE! Hey, who doesn't love free advice when it's GOOD advice.

God is in Control

Okay so I learned another valuable lesson today. God's time is not our time.

I don't talk alot about my faith, but I'm a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. I have been most of my life. I went to christian school as a teen and got my Master's degree from a Seminary. The last job I held before giving birth to our angelbaby was a counselor at a local church.

Yet, I still have to be reminded that control is an ILLUSION, I am NOT in control of my life. That was the hardest lesson I had to learn after we lost our precious Morgan. Why God, why me? I did things the right way. I don't understand why this is happening to me? We wanted that baby. She was loved, she was cherished.

Months after our loss, I was a substitute therapist for a short term therapy group. On my first day I met a young lady who was a recovering crack addict. She was mother to a beautiful baby girl around the same age as Morgan would have been. Throughout her preganancy she did crack, heroin and even prostitiuted herself. Yet when asked about her baby, who had no apparent problems, she replied, "my baby was spared because I asked God to watch over her". I was so angry; not with her, but with God. Didn't I pray enough. What did I do wrong?

I don't know why things happen. I've spent the better part of four years searching for answers. I no longer say "everything happens for a reason". Personally, I've come to accept that LIFE just happens and it's up to us to give purpose or meaning to that experience in OUR life.

For me, the reason Morgan happened, was to give me a fresh start. Remind me what life is about. Living. Life to the Fullest. Taking no day for granted. Chasing my dreams and perhaps making a fool of myself along the way.

Each time I write a post about my angelbaby {on a blog about decorating} I take a chance of making a fool of myself. But, for me that's part of the process. THIS process of becoming myself; the self...GOD sees.

As long as I'm alive, I will continue to talk about Morgan. She was my daughter and if I don't, no one will. Simply put, her life changed mine.

Now the point to all this....Since High School, I wanted to be a nurse but I chose a different career path because I didn't think I was smart enough to get through nursing school. Four months ago, I applied to my alma mater's nursing program and was ~~rejected~~ declined a seat due to low math and science scores. After that, I decided it was time to accept my lot and look for a counseling job when my oldest son starts school.

God reminded that things happen in HIS time. Today, I received a letter of acceptance to the spring nursing program. Funny thing, I don't remember applying.

I believe God is directing my path, but I'm overwhelmed with all the details. I'm prayerful that things will work out. I have eight weeks until class starts...

Thrifter's Challenge

About the time I started blogging, I started budgeting $20 a week for decorating projects. I call it my thrifter's challenge.

After a month of no thrifting, last week I ventured out to our local "antiques" stores. A couple misses, but one major hit.

Set in a two story building dating back to 1876, Clossman's is like one of those Antique/Flea Market Shows. They have a little bit of everything and the prices are affordable; not Goodwill affordable but still within my price range.

On my first trip there, I spotted a couple chairs with potential and was preparing to do a closer inspection when the owner told me he was closing early. Poor guy didn't feel well. So, I left without a fight but not before telling him in my most convincing Schwarzeneggar voice, "I'll be back".

The next day, I returned to claim my prize; a {slightly different} pair of mid century-style chairs.

The cost? Just two weeks of my thrifter's challenge budget. Yes, I overspent....but hey, it's been a month of no shopping.

Now as much as I'd love to show you the beautiful AFTER photos...I can't. Things don't happen that fast around here.

Change of Season

I want to thank you all for accompanying me through this season of sadness. Your thoughts, prayers, and comments were greatly appreciated.

Despite our grief, I have many favorite memories of that experience. Memories of how kind and compassionate people can truly be. Thinking back to the eve of January 11, 2006. As Hubby and I sat in the hospital spending our final moments with Morgan, a childhood friend came to visit. I'll never forget the way he held and loved our baby just as he would his own. Before leaving he said to me, "God will bless you". Without pause, I responded, "He already has." Even then, in the face of hurt and pain, I chose not to focus on our loss, but the life we had been blessed to share. Four years later, I'm still blessed.

Today begins a new season of THIS new year. I'll continue to talk about Morgan. She was part of me and that experience affected who I am today. But for now it's now TIME to dance, more specifically, it's time to do the Happy Dance!

I got my first Blog Award. Yay!!!! The beautiful Michelle at A Little French Loven has nominated me for the Kreativ Blogger award.

As part of the award process, I have to list 7 little known facts about myself. So I'm going to tell you seven reasons why I have a blessed life.

I have three siblings; two of whom I was raised with by our mother. Hope and Josh are 11 and 12 years my junior, respectively.

I've been married to my best friend for 13 years.

I've been to Mexico, Canada, Spain, Hawaii and a few Caribbean cruises. Oh how, I love to travel!

I have a Master's degree in Clinical Counseling and worked in community mental health for 10 years. This experience continues to remind me of how great my life is.

I've been home for the first years of my boys' life.

I plan on moving closer to the beach when Hubby retires in six years and six months. Hence, the SECRET meaning to the title Destination Seaborn:) and FINALLY...

I have a group of "friends" who understand and appreciate my need to make the world a beautiful place...one space at a time. Thank you all for being in my life!

An Angelversary

When someone comes into our lives and they are too quietly and quickly gone, they leave footprints on our hearts...and their memory stays with us forever.

Four years today, I delivered my precious baby girl, Morgan Rose. In the face of grief, my mother wrote this poem that was read at her funeral.

Come Play With Me

"Come play with me" her grandma wrote

"And we'll make mud pies in a boat"

"Come play with me" her auntie said

"There are babies and books underneath my bed"

"Come play with me" her uncle crooned

"We'll sing silly songs down in my room"

"Come play with me" her mommy pled

"Let me put some pretty bows up in your head"

"Come play with me, Morgan" her Daddy cried

"I'll take my princess on a real long ride"

It was an angel's voice she answered to one night

"Come play with me and we'll take our flight-

away from sickness, pain and grief

A Year in Review: Favorite Projects 2009

We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives...not looking for flaws, but for potential. ~Ellen Goodman

Oh my goodness, it's going to snow! Uh-oh...too late, it already has. I guess that's why I'm posting a THIRD time this week.

The gracious Rhoda at Southern Hospitality is hosting a Top Project's of 2009 Party and I wanted to link up. So here's my favorite projects from the past year.

Curb Appeal

Our house, affectionately dubbed Seaborn was in desperate need of TLC when we purchased it in 2005.

This past summer we completed our vision of Seaborn's curb appeal with Hubby-built shutters and window box, painted foundaton and new landscape.

After the addition of a Hubby-built deck with pergola and landscape, Seaborn now shines.

Christmas

I adorned these Dollar Tree gift boxes with wire-edged ribbon and hot glue for my Christmas mantel. Aren't they adorable!

Sewing these copy-cat Ballard's stockings was one of my favorite projects. I loved how they turned out.

And of course, I can't forget Hubby's contribution to our Christmas. He installed these beautiful Christmas lights for us and the kids to enjoy! The snow before Christmas made the lights even more magical.

My proudest achievements

The newest addition to our family, Miles Alexander was born on April 14, 2009. No epidural for me, he wanted out fast and hasn't slowed down since!

My family. Yep, that's me! I tend to be a little camera shy, so you may want to look fast before I have second thoughts.

Well, that's it folks! The first three months of my blog and the last three months of 2009. I hope you'll join me in this New Year, I have some exciting things planned for Destination Seaborn.

DIY Design {Introduction}

For the past few months I've felt like a kid in a candy store. I'm just so excited to have a blog that I haven't really focused on my specific interests and desire to learn more about decorating.

It's true, I only started Destination Seaborn to participate in the cool MckLinky parties. But now that I'm blogging, it's become a great way to improve my decorating skills and share them with you in the process.

But because I'm soo000 OCD and can't do anything for fun, I've developed a strategic plan for my blog. I was tempted to call this plan a mission statement but then I started having flashbacks of Jerry Maguire and I didn't want y'all to start yelling "Show me the Money" if you were disappointed with my posts. So I'll just call it my strategic plan.

Don't worry, there won't be any quizzes or lengthy reading assignments, unless of course, you consider this post to be a lengthy reading assignment. This is just a way of organizing my thoughts and the future direction/design of my blog. And ya thought I was joking when I said I have OCD?

The goal of this plan: To think like a professional designer in an effort to decorate Seaborn on a modest budget. Through a series of steps, I'll teach myself about the design process and the many aspects of decorating like a professional.

Enough talk...let's take a look at my strategic plan for decorating like a pro:

Assess to determine needs and budget for project
Consult local design firm for ideas and inspiration
Develop plan with assistance of favorite Interior Designer
Discuss design plan with various contractors (painting, construction, plumbing)
Window shopping to familiarize self with likes/dislikes, styles and cost of materials
Acquire materials to complete and implement plan
Publish work to Design Publication

Now, before you start panicking and saying how absurd this is, you'll have to come back. Trust me, this IS a DIY project! I will be expounding on each of these points....and even using pictures for those visual learners out there.

My goal is to post one step each week until I've completed the list.

Remembering...

Now that the hustle and bustle of the holidays are over, I'm taking a moment to remember...

Mother's Day 2005. The day I found out I was pregnant with our first child. Due date: January 13, 2006.

January 10, 2006. The day I delivered our first child...stillborn.

The Christmas season of 2005 holds alot of memories for that pregnancy. Although, we hadn't moved into our Seaborn home, we were getting close. The hardwood floors had been refinished and the basement family room had been carpeted. When Hubby wasn't working at his full-time job, he was working on our dream home. He gave the lower-level bath a makeover until the main bath was finished and painted the two main bedrooms.

One of my favorite memories of that holiday season occured on the Eve of Christmas 2005, when Hubby came home after working afternoon shift. He insisted that I go with him, just as I was. He wanted to give me my Christmas gift. So dressed in my long nightgown and wool slippers, we headed to Seaborn so he could assemble the baby's crib.

I'll never forget that Christmas and how exciting it was. What better gift is there than the gift of life? Wanting to fully engage in the joy and experience of expecting, we opted NOT to find out the sex of our unborn child. I wanted a girl and Hubby wanted a boy. Prepared for either, our girl name was Morgan Rose and our boy name was Owen Allan. Who would be right?
Only time would tell. Until then Hubby and I continued to share our hopes and dreams for our baby. Buying Seaborn was only the beginning...

You see that sidewalk out front, I envisioned myself teaching our little one how to ride the retro red tricycle on that very sidewalk. While Hubby wanted to pull him or her, a whoooole block and a half down our Maple-lined street, to the county fair in a little red wagon. Both the radio flyer tricycle and red wagon were my gifts to our unborn child.
Those were just some of our dreams for our baby. It did not include our hopes of taking him or her to Disney World for the first time and watching their little eyes light up in awe of Magic Kingdom. Or perhaps the sweetest and most simplest of hopes...gently rocking our baby to sleep, touching their soft skin or smelling their sweet baby scent.
A few weeks after we buried our baby, I found a song called My Name by George Canyon. Written from the perspective of an unborn child who dies and goes to heaven, it was perfect! I couldn't have written something more befitting of my experience. This song was just what I needed to hear..that my baby felt loved!
Our baby's name was Morgan Rose.

Thankful on a Tuesday at Chatting at the Sky

New Year, New Look

This New Year marks four years that Hubby and I moved into Seaborn. And I've decided that it's been a construction zone for too long! Yes, I can finally say that! Now that most of our reno-projects are done, I can get down to the fun part. Decorating! Adding personality! Making this house our home!

Can you tell I'm excited? Seriously y'all, we have one set of prints hanging on our walls...wait a minute...I don't think you heard me!

In our entire 1700+ square feet house, we have ONE set of botanical prints hanging on our walls. The other two items (mirrors) are propped up. No beautifully framed family photos, no snaps of our travels, no cute pics of our cuties. Nada!

So let me tell you what new looks I have in mind for 2010:

The Living Room. Once I removed the Christmas decor, I was reminded of why I dislike our living room. Sure, we've made some changes, but this room feels cold, uninviting and it echoes. Here's what it looked like when we bought it four years ago:

To date, you see the biggest change has been refinishing the hardwood floors. I'm sure this CAN be a DIY project, but it was a little too ambitious for Hubby and I to attempt.

Other changes made to the Living Room include:

Replacing the mini blinds with faux wood, plantation-style blinds.
Cleaning the fireplace and spray painting the brass doors.
Updated electrical outlets and ceiling fan with attached light.
Removing knick-knack shelf and repairing drywall.
Taking down wallpaper border and repainting with a fresh coat of paint.

With the New Year, I would like to make this room more inviting to us and our company. So please stay tuned as I'll be posting more information regarding my plans for this room! If you'd like to see more of our before pics, please click here.

For the past couple weeks we've been busy with a few, but very time consuming DIY projects.

Griswald Christmas. During the holiday season Hubby loves to watch Christmas Vacation. I can't tell you how many times we've seen it. Yet, no matter how many times he watches it, he laughs as if it's the first time. Well, it must be where he gets his inspiration because like Clark Griswald, Hubby likes to light up the night with outdoor Christmas lights. Whew...try saying that three times. So here's a tailored version of a Griswald Christmas.

Hubby is very meticulous about hanging lights...yes, he measures and marks the space between the light strands to make sure it's even. He had plans of wrapping all the posts like the three on the deck. Unfortunately, Longaberger bought all the red lights within a 30 mile radius of Dresden. So, we'll just have to wait till next year.

Stockings. Browsing through the Ballard's catalog, I was inspired when I saw the most colorful and whimsical stockings. I had to have them! But, at $35 a pop, I don't think so! Undettered, I scoured the internet until I found a crafty blogger named Jenny Garland. On her website, Jenny has an awesome tutorial, complete with pattern, for sewing up one of these darlings for yourself.

No problem! I thought. I'll just whip up five of these in no time.

Did I mention that I'm a beginner seamstress? No kidding here, it took me an hour to figure out how to thread the bobbin and load it into the bobbin compartment.

Well, a week and five stockings later...here's what I got.

Pretty good, huh? Yeah, I'm proud of myself.

I estimate this project took me about $20 in materials and 20 hours of time. I tweaked Jenny's pattern to my preference and used the cheapest fabric I could find at HobLob. I love pleats and wanted lots of them, so I set my pleats 1.25" apart. Honestly the hardest part of this project was attaching the pom-pom fringe and pleated cuff to the stocking.

Ornamental Highlights of Christmas

It's Party Time! I'm joining the Holiday Fun at Centsational Girl and Southern Hospitality.

This year's Christmas has been very exciting for me and Hubby. It's the first time, since becoming parents, that we've stayed home and attempted to go ALL out decorating for the little ones on a modest budget.

So, while Hubby took care of the outside, I was in charge of decorating inside...particularly the Christmas tree. Sounds easy enough?

Not exactly...

First lesson learned, pre-school children do not like it when they are NOT the center of their parent's attention. Second lesson, when you buy a new ornament, put it with the rest of the Christmas "stuff" so you don't spend valuable time searching for it.

Once I resolved the first issue with naptime, I was given two hours of partially uninterrupted time to work on the second issue.

It took me a week, but I am proud to say my Christmas tree is almost finished. Here are the ornamental highlights of my search.

Family Heirlooms. My grandmother bought these ornaments in 1988 to decorate a special tree...just for her grandchildren. They've been handed down through the family and now I am priviledge to share them with my children.

In our travels. Hubby and I love to travel. These are some of my favorite ornaments that we've picked up along the way.

Nassau, Bahamas (Dec 2008). This starfish is by far my prettiest bauble! Covered with iridescent glitter, this picture does not do it justice.

Isle of Palms, SC (Aug 2009). Where Hubby and I hope to retire!

Hawaii (Dec 2006). Picked this up for my MIL (pictured off her tree). This was a special vacation to restore my soul.

Massachusetts (Sept 2008). Nothing prettier than autumn in New England.

Disneyworld (Dec 2008). Where Hubby and I went on our first vacation together. Fifteen years later, it's still a magical place!

So Easy {a child can do it} Wreath

One of my favorite things about the holidays is spending time with loved ones. This weekend I got to spend time with my "chosen family" ...my dearest friends from childhood.

Most of us have know each other since we were little ones crawling about our parent's feet. Despite distance, death and divorce our friendships have presevered. They've become a source of strength, support and lots of fun and laughter.

Each time I visit my friend Shelly (this weekend's hostess), I also look forward to hanging out with her daughter Alexis. At eleven years old, Alexis is wise beyond her years. Unlike some girls her age, she is mature, sensitive to the needs others and very selfless!

On a recent trip, her mother informed me that Alexis loves crafts and is becoming "artsy fartsy" like her Aunt Lisa (that's me). Imagine my delight...I found a craft buddy!

So, as I traveled to the City for our "girls get together"...I was also thinking of a quick holiday project that Alexis and I could do.

Well, as the adage goes, "Time flies when you're having fun". So with thirty minutes to spare, Shelly, Alexis and I made a quick trip to the Dollar Tree. She picked up the last six tubes of red and green bulb ornaments. I stood there, in the middle of the store and gave Alexis directions on how to make the infamous "Eddie Ross Ornament Wreath".

Well, less than 24 hours later, Alexis called me and asked me to check my e-mail. She sent me a photo of her completed wreath. How beautiful! Her mom confirmed that Alexis did this all by herself and in less than two hours.

New Traditions

Something about an old-fashioned Christmas is hard to forget. ~Hugh Downs

As Hubby and I celebrate 13 years of marriage this month, we'll also begin a new tradition. Instead of going on vacation for our anniversary, we'll be staying home.

Over the course of our marriage, Hubby and I have been blessed to travel to some great destinations during the Holiday season. Last year, as I was six months pregnant, Hubby and I drove 10 hours with a 19 month old to take a cruise. While it was a wonderful experience, Hubby and I returned home and exhausted ourselves to decorate and give our little one the Christmas we dreamed of. After that we decided to temporarily forego (I hope) our anniversary vacation and celebrate Christmas at home.

For the past week, Hubby's been working hard to hang lights while I've been thinking hard of affordable ways to decorate our home for the little ones.

Although our Christmas is still Under Construction, I'll leave you with a sneak preview of what's to come.

Y'all remember this picture?

My dream home...the way it appeared in May 2005 when I fell in love....In love with all it's potential.
With one glance at the overgrown yard, it was pretty clear that this house had been neglected. I was curious...was the inside just as neglected? AWW, I had to know what the inside looked like.
A call to the listing agent's office and I finally got the rundown on this brokedown. It was a foreclosure and sat vacant for two years. Previously listed and practically sold, the house was unable to close due to a lien on the property. The listing was in the process of being transferred to another realtor. However, the agent did not share the name of the new realtor...all he said was "With this much interest, I should have kept it". UGH!!!!!!!!!
So I waited....a few hours....and called back to speak to the receptionist. YES!!!!!!!! She told me the name of the new realtor. A few days later with the new listing agent, who was also our new realtor and new BFF, we saw this.
We entered through the kitchen door.

Liked the galley style kitchen, original cabinetry, and well-lit space.
Disliked the carpet on the floor, chotchkie shelves, stenciling and inadequate lighting.

Liked the idea of a bonus area
Disliked the worn green carpet, walls made of fiberboard (no drywall), low ceiling height, inadequate heating/cooling. Yep, you know where this is going. A total redo still waiting to be done! Until then, it makes a great storage room.

Overall, we loved that the house was in it's ORIGINAL state...it still had the crystal door handles. After talking to a few neighbors, we believe we're only the third owners of this home. The last tenet was just here for a couple years. Our vision is simple, update the house while preserving the 1940's character.

The color white. So clean and pure. In my wardrobe or home decor, I love the color white. To me, it's like a Rolls Royce; a classic that never goes out of style.

Linen. The touch. The feel of linen. The fabric of my life. Ooops! I think that's the motto for cotton. Well, most days that's all I can afford is good quality, 100% cotton. However, I really am In Love with Linen. It's WELL worth the splurge on special occasions, like vacation or decorating special places, like the master bedroom.

Hydrangeas. I can't get enough of them. They are truly the all-star of my garden. I have three "little lamb" hydrangeas in memory of our lamb in heaven and three limelight hydranges...they're all white, of course. At the end of the season, I use the dried flowers as an alternative to "silk" flowers.

Bubble baths.

Relaxing music performed by a single instrument like a piano or acoustic guitar. Usually found at Walmart and Target for $15, I've found comparable CD's at Dollar Tree, which makes it all the more calming.

Curb Appeal: Pergola

That's the only way I can describe my feelings for this chapter of our renovation project: The Pergola.

After selling our newly constructed home in 2005, Hubby and I purchased five acres of land in hopes of building another house. We were temporarily living at my hubby's childhood home when I found out I was pregnant.

Oh the timing...we had been trying to conceive for two unsuccessful years. "Why now?" I asked God. I didn't want to build a house while I was pregnant and I didn't want to live at my MIL's.

All these thoughts were running through my mind on that eminent day in May. The day I saw the house of my dreams. Yes, the house I planned on raising my unborn child.

Once we closed on the house, we worked feverishly, as time would allow. We tore up nasty carpet to reveal oak hardwoods. We gutted the main bathroom, the basement, a "bonus" room above the garage, took off all the kitchen cabinet doors for repainting and improved the function/appearance of our basement bathroom....all projects I hope to share with you.

Before long, it was Christmas and my due date was approaching. We officially moved in on New Years Eve. As a new mother, I was anxious to nest and felt guilty that the nursery wasn't finished. A week later, none of that would matter.

There would be no baby come home...at least not then. The baby I had loved, nurtured and bought this house for, was gone. Stillborn, three days before the due date.

What to do? Do we stay? Do we move? One thing for sure, we had to stay long enough to put the house back together. So, while I was in shock, my "Handy" Andy jumped into as many DIY projects as he could find. One of his first, was building an awesome movie screen in our basement (yet, another project to share in the future).

Weeks later, just as the initial shock was wearing off, we got hit with another reality...literally. A teenage neighbor ran into the side of our house. Thankfully, our central air unit absorbed the brunt of the impact.

Once the police officers left and we inspected the central air unit, it was determined that it would have to be replaced...at the expense of the culprit, of course. It didn't take me long to figure out that we could RELOCATE the unit to make room for a deck....a project we had planned on doing much later.
As later became sooner, Hubby now had another project that allowed him to work through his grief. He doesn't show much emotion, but I honestly believe this deck was built with his blood, sweat and TEARS.

The first job was taking out the double hung windows. We then replaced them with a five foot sliding door. Throughout the construction, the plans changed a couple times. We added the pergola to help shade the deck...this area gets ALOT of sun. And we added a little bump-out for our BOHEMITH grill.

Here it is...ALL FINISHED! The posts were wrapped in prefabricated architectural columns made of fiberglass and ordered online. In-stock vinyl rails were used to enclose the pergola deck. The remaining pieces of treated lumber got a liberal coat of white paint. We later added an allweather ceiling fan to cool down those warm summer days.

Three years and two beautiful sons later, this house now brings me joy.

What a Steel!

This past week, I've been really inspired to do some crafting. So, I staked out a spot in our basement family room/home office/play room/home theater/guest suite/well...you get the picture.

Once I finished "creating" (um-um, making a mess) I discovered I needed to do some reorganizing to allow for additional storage. Great....I thought, one more thing to add to the never-ending list.

Well, imagine my delight when I spied this six-drawered solution to my storage problem (in Goodwill, of course)...

A vintage metal desk with a matching chair!!!!!!

At that moment I felt like Bob Barker 'cause the price is right!

After measuring to ensure the fit, we brought the ten dollar "tanker" home. But not before I enquired about the desk's history. Come on people, I live in a small city!

The manager confirmed my suspicion by saying the desk came from a local factory that closed after moving their production to Mexico and leaving dozens of people without jobs. Sadly, that factory had been in town for more than four decades.

Call me sentimental, but I feel like I'm preserving a part of my past by bringing that desk into my life. So, here she is, all cleaned up and in her new home.

You know, I used to have a mahogany dining table here. It's amazing how this 2oo lb beauty really lightens up the space now.

Curb Appeal: Before and After

Does this look like a house you could fall in love with? Even before stepping a foot inside?

Well, that's how I felt when I laid eyes on this little gem in May 2005.

It's hard to believe that just five months before that day, Hubby and I were living in our custom built three bedroom ranch in the "northend". Northend- Our version of Weezy and George Jefferson's east-end, deluxe apartment in the sky".

Ten years ago, when we began construction on our house, it was a dream come true. The perfect house with the perfect location; country life within five minutes of city convenience. We were surrounded by privacy, a large pond, mature evergreens and acre upon acre of open field full of deer, rabbits and other wildlife. Does it get any better than this?

Absolutely NOT! The day after we moved into our newly built house, construction began.

Huh?

Yes, the day after we moved into our new house, construction began on a multi-unit, subsidized- income apartment complex....just three feet off our property line. And just beyond the housing complex, they were adding a four lane state route addition. Oh yes!

We called that home for four years, and once the last of our "original" neighbors decided to move, we opted to do likewise. Lucky for us, our house sold within hours of listing it with our realtor.

We swiftly purchased five acres in a planned community with lots of rules and regulations to protect our investment. However, life had other plans....you'll have to keep coming back to hear that story.

Let's get back to May 2005, as my sister and I took a stroll around the neighborhood (we were temporarily living at my MIL's), I saw this house and immediately recognized the potential in it.

This was MY house; the place my SOUL longed for. The place I wanted to teach my kids how to ride their bicycles. So, after a couple tours and a competitive bidding process, we were finally able to call it ours.

And thus began a four year process of polishing this "diamond in the rough" into the gem I like to call home. All the projects (i.e. board and batten shutters, window box, landscape, pergola deck and repainted foundation) were completed by my personal Handy Andy and his protoge, moi. "Vintage" Clothes

You ever wonder what happens to name brand clothes if they don't sell? Maybe you already know the answer to this question, but I didn't until today.

They go to our favorite dollar craft store......DOLLAR TREE. Yeah, that's what I thought too.

As I walked into DT, I had one of those moments where you ask yourself "where am I and what am I doing here?" I immediately did a double take to make sure I was in said location. Once confirmed, I stood in awe of what I saw.

A designer name brand that I LOVE and haven't seen in LOOOONG time. Talbots...yeah, a Talbots shirt being sold for a buck at the dollar store. Who ever would have known that?

The bin was marked "Vintage" Clothes, but as I looked through, I recognized a couple other name brands i.e. Rue 21 and Old Navy. Now granted, these were not Sunday's best clothes (and they really weren't what I think of as "vintage"), but they were nice cotton t-shirts; great for crafting and doing all the things that Moms do.

As I was on a tight schedule to visit my favorite dollar stores within two hours, I didn't sort through the bin. I had to stick to my aggressive time plan and craft budget. Well, no sooner than I loaded my cart up and headed for the check-out, I bumped into a dear friend.

All I can say is I stuck to the budget...

Hopefully, I'll get to the other stores this week so I can get some projects finished and posted.

Fall Flower Arrangement

This is my first attempt at creating a fall flower arrangement. I love the designer arragements that you see in all the floral shops but of course they're WAY out of my price range. However, that did not stop me from trying to make my own.

I picked up some pieces from all my favorite haunts; Hobby Lobby, Family Dollar and Garden Ridge. I also included some dried hydrangeas from my garden. My inital budget was $20, but the actual cost was around $30...that container was larger than I thought.

Seeing the beautiful initial wreaths in blogland (I apologize, I don't have the specific links), I thought it would be cool to hang a big ole' W in front of my container. I kind of like how it fills in the void....plus it hides where paint is chipping off.

Okay, please excuse the green satin ribbon...that's all I had at the moment. I've since replaced it with brown ribbon.

You Can Do It!

Not sure when the DIY decorating revolution began, but for me it started about the time I got married in ‘96. As a young bride, I was eager to turn my hubby’s bachelor pad into our home.

Watching TV, my inspiration was limited to Martha Stewart and Lynette Jennings. Both great designers, but not reflective of my youthful, transitional style.

Then, along came Interior Motives with Christopher Lowell. I was hooked! My VCR was set every weekday for 10am. (Do they even sell VCR's anymore?) I watched each episode, intently, making mental notes of projects I’d like to try. But more than anything, I enjoyed the message Christopher Lowell sent his viewers…You can do it!

Since then, many years have passed and a slew of decoratoring gurus have popped up. And after thirteen years, four houses and three pregnancies later….I’ve yet to complete one of those projects I saw on Interior Motives.

I’m now a stay at home mom with a house full of unfinished projects and a modest decorating budget. I finally have the time to do those projects but, unfortunately my Christopher Lowell VCR tapes have gone by the wayside.

So what’s a gal to do for inspiration? Surf the web, of course! Thank goodness for blogs like Centsational Girl, Southern Hospitality, DIY Show Off, Thrifty Decor Chick and many, many, more. They’ve been such an inspiration to me. Reminding me of what I heard so long ago from Christopher Lowell…You can do it!
